Tuta absoluta is a devastating pest of tomato, even the potato, aubergine and common beans. Recently tuta absoluta considered be a serious threat to production.

 

IPM

Sex pheromone trap is using as early detection tool. Mass trapping and lure and king application of pheromone has been found to be effective to control tuta absoluta.

Timing of Trapping

It is best to place traps for the first time at least 1 month before harvest and maitain traps between cropping cycles. Trapping during the post harvest period is important.

 

Trap Density

For detection, place 1-2 traps each area.

For monitoring, 2-3 traps per hectare for open fields.

For mass trapping,15-45 traps for greenhouse areas, 10-20 traps for open fields.

 

Trap Position

Traps should be hung as low as practically possible to be close to the plant. About 1-2 ft over the plant.

 

Lures

Lures can be changed every 4-6 weeks.

 

Lures handling

Pheromone lures are very sensitive tool. They can be affected by exposure to elevated heat and direct sunshine. Direct touching by hand many cause cross contamination leading to mixed catches in the trap. Some contaminants such as Nicotine may have repellent effect reducing trap catch.

 

Lure Storage

Cool dy place. Shelf life is more than 2 years depending on the storage temperature.
